About The Academy Building Lofts
Constructed in 1873, The Academy Building once stood strong as Rochester’s first public high school. Throughout the generations, the building experienced many different lives, becoming a Municipal Court, City School District Headquarters, and, eventually, private office space.
The Traikos Group purchased the property in 2007, converting the space into luxury housing, office, and retail space in 2012. While in the design stage, we prioritized comfort and practicality while incorporating modern standards and flair into our apartment building. Our goal was to create a living environment that we, ourselves, would love coming home to — which we believe we have achieved.

“This was my favorite place to live, ever! First, it is historic and beautiful; second, the windows are enormous (makes the apartment very light with cool views). Third, the loft apartments have many upscale features like top-of-the-line double-doored medicine cabinets mirrored on the inside!
There is nothing builder-basic about these apartments at all! But the most important and best part of living here was the owner, George, and his employee and building supervisor, Rashad!
They were always present and available. The place is immaculate, packages are delivered to your door, and Rashad follows a maintenance schedule for updating and replacing batteries, cleaning the filters, washing windows, etc. Communication is often and clear, and if anything needs looking into, they are immediately on it! Bonus – The Founder’s Cafe is on the first floor with amazing food and great people!
It is everything you want in a rental living space and more… professional and friendly! I will miss hearing the church bells…I will miss living here!”
“Great apartments, in a very central location, and great amenities. Very responsive and responsible landlord.”

“I took an apartment at The Academy Building so I can have a secondary home for my business trips to the region. Every time I return to the building I find it in perfect condition, always clean and well-kept. And I never get tired of experiencing a piece of history every time I walk inside.”

“I called the Academy building home for the past nearly seven years. The building and loft apartments are gorgeous. The high ceilings and vast windows are not only impressive but always allow abundant light to enter and cheer up the space — even on a cloudy day. I always enjoyed the sunsets as the large windows allowed an unobstructed view. The maintenance of the building was always top-notch, and the landlord is very responsive. The location of the building is great-near 490. I miss it already!”

“We could not have asked for a better home for our growing family than the Academy Building. We had two children during the four years we lived there, but we eventually moved out of state for a job opportunity. We already miss the high ceilings and natural light of our apartment. We became very close with the staff of the Academy Building, as well as the staff at the great cafe inside. The landlord and building manager are both highly responsive and caring. The architecture and details of the building and the apartments are gorgeous and so unique, and the environment is friendly and welcoming.
We felt very safe there, which was one of the reasons we chose the apartment in the first place. The location is definitely walkable to some great restaurants and coffee shops, as well as the Genesee River path. I would highly recommend the Academy Building. The only cons were that parking during daytime hours could be tough if you have more than one car and not much outdoor space other than the front patio (although charcoal grill there now!), both very typical for apartments in the city.”

“The Academy building is not only gorgeous but a great place to live! It’s close to everything, and the street is quiet. The property is always very clean and well maintained. The high ceilings and huge windows make an impression on anyone who visits. The space feels uplifting even on a gloomy Rochester day!
It has all the conveniences you need, like laundry in your own space and off-street parking. I’ve enjoyed urban loft living before, but there is no place that compares to the Academy building!”
